Surviving the First Trimester: 10 Things I Wish I Knew

The first trimester is wild. You're exhausted, nauseous, emotional, and somehow expected to carry on like everything's normal. Here are the things I wish someone had told me before those two pink lines appeared.

1. The Exhaustion Is Real

I'm not talking "I stayed up late" tired. I'm talking "I fell asleep at my desk at 2 PM on a Tuesday" tired. Your body is building a whole new organ (the placenta!) โ€” of course you're wiped out.

Tip: Give yourself permission to nap. The dishes can wait.

2. Morning Sickness Doesn't Follow a Schedule

They call it "morning" sickness, but mine showed up at 4 PM like clockwork. For some moms, it's all day. For others, it's barely there. There's no wrong way to feel nauseous.

What helped me:

  • Keeping crackers on my nightstand
  • Ginger tea (the real stuff, not ginger-flavored)
  • Eating small meals every 2-3 hours
  • B6 vitamins (ask your doctor first!)

3. You Might Not "Feel" Pregnant Yet

No bump, no kicks, just vague symptoms and a lot of anxiety. This is completely normal. It doesn't mean something is wrong.

4. Your Emotions Will Be All Over the Place

I cried at a commercial about dogs. I also cried because my toast was too crunchy. Hormones are powerful things, and your feelings are valid โ€” even the weird ones.

5. Food Aversions Are Bizarre

Last week I loved chicken. This week the thought of it makes me gag. Your body is calling the shots right now, and that's okay. Eat what you can stomach.

6. Not Everyone Announces Right Away

There's no right time to share the news. Some people tell everyone at 6 weeks; others wait until 14. Do what feels right for you.

7. Ask for Help

You don't get extra points for doing everything yourself. Let people bring you meals, watch your older kids, or just sit with you while you rest.

8. Stay Off Google at 2 AM

I know, I know. But spiraling through worst-case scenarios at midnight helps exactly no one. Write down your questions and bring them to your next appointment.

9. Every Pregnancy Is Different

Just because your sister breezed through trimester one doesn't mean you will โ€” and vice versa. Comparison is the thief of joy, especially right now.

10. You're Already a Great Mom

The fact that you're reading this, worrying, planning, and caring? That's motherhood. You've already started, and you're doing beautifully.

Hang in there, mama. The second trimester glow is coming. ๐ŸŒŸ
